Feeling stuck in life Take your life from stuck to awesome

Feeling stuck in life Take your life from stuck to awesomeFeeling stuck in life Take your life from stuck to awesomeIt sucks to feel stuck.Youre in a rut, and you cant get unstuck.Youre convinced that something must change, whether in your work or personal life. But you are struggling to figure it out. It happens to all of us. The most important thing is to act and refuse to stay stuck.Staying stuck and refusing to do something about it, is the biggest obstacle to your recovery.Alistair Smith once said, Getting stuck is leid a problem. Staying stuck is. Good learners practice getting unstuck,Many people want something better for their lives, but they dont know where to start. Others have done amazing things in the past, they are struggling in the present to be awesome again.Ladders is now on SmartNewsDownload the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.The good news is, its just a feeling, when you start to make positive mov ement forward, the feeling will change.Mandy Hale saysGrowth is painful. Change is painful. But nothing is as painful as staying stuck somewhere you dont belong. When youre stuck, things feel immovable, entrenched, even hopeless but the good news, you can always do something about it.When you are stuck, Bruce Chant recommends that you ask yourself three important questions to re-calibrate and get moving in the right direction again. Those three questions areWhat do you want? Name it. Define it. Call it out. What is stopping you? A belief or mindset. Fear. An excuse. What do you need to do to obtain it? Now you can work to address the issue, but do so by starting small.Take a break to restore flowSometimes all you need to restore flow, is to take a step back and ask where the current patterns are leading and whether you are making progress or not. If you feel stuck in a different area of your life, break the norm. When welches the last time you deliberately broke your flow. Taking a break every now and then is important for your work. Do yourself a favor and take sometime off to recuperate.Dont stay put in one spot for too long. Move. Get up. Take a 15 min walk. The faster your blood moves, the faster oxygen gets to your brain. Hence, better ideas, better results.Practice solitude. If you are distracted by too many things, it pays to disconnect. Remove distractions. Turn off notifications. Or better still, turn off your phone, mobile devices and leverage silence to think or relax. In other words, block out the external world and retreat inwards to find new energy.Sometimes all you need is a change of environment, style, routine or pattern. Break away from the usual.Sura, a Meditation Coach, recommmends you move and play. She writesBeing immersed in movement and play really gets the flow of energy moving in your body and your life. Try a new way of moving dancing, tai chi, racquetball. Go see a comedy. Paint. Play Twister or Monopoly. Whatever it is, let yourself be f ree without restriction. What are the silly, playful things that you dont usually make time for? Giving yourself time to play and unwind can make an immense difference in bringing new energy into your life.Try lateral thinkingLateral thinking means deliberately setting out to look at a challenge from completely different angles to find great solutions that would otherwise remain hidden. As Einstein said insanity is doing the saatkorn thing over and over again but expecting different results. A new approach is probably all you need to get unstuck.Break away from vertical thinking.Vertical Step by step, analyzing, based on facts and convention, one expected result.Lateral Provokes, jumps from one to another, breaks the rules, looks at possibilities, many resultsShane Snow, author of Smartcuts How Hackers, Innovators, and Icons Accelerate Success explainsLateral Thinking is the process of solving problems via different angles than you might expect. It doesnt happen when you do more of t he same thing. So just simply working harder may not accomplish a goal like rethinking the approach youre taking. Lateral thinking is about getting in the mindset of breaking the rules that arent really rules theyre just the way things have been conventionally done in the past.Changing courseChanging course can be challenging, but what makes it exciting is the restoration of hope.Give yourself a new and significant challenge. To get that momentum back, give yourself something to pursue and find an accountability partner to help you take actionable steps.Your pursuit should be meaningful to you. Why you pursue something is equally as important as what you pursue. Start something greater than yourself. Something you truly believe in.Just doing something different can boost your mood, change your perspective and give you a sense of optimism to move forward.Pursue something that bring out the best in you. That way you will enjoy the journey and the process. You can easily lose the motivat ion in the process and give up. But everything changes when you leverage an accountability system. To be accountable, all you need is a clear goal and a willingness to let others help you achieve it.When you tell yourself - and no one else - that you will quit smoking, start a new gym routine, write a book, launch a meaningful project or quit your just okay job in order to pursue something greater and better, you are less likely to do it. Its easy to choose something else more comfortable and make excuses. When you make your goals public, you receive a combination of responses you can use to fuel your desire to succeedFind someone who will challenge, engage and evoke a sense of accomplishment in you.Move beyond mere talk and commit to specific actions that will move your goals forward, and agree with someone else to hold you accountable.Take the easiest step you can imagine to change courseOnce you start moving, youll feel unbelievably better. Youll feel the power of motion, youll f eel the rut moving behind you. That one step - its all it takes to start moving and creating again. You dont have to be stuck. Purpose You actually dont need it in your career

Purpose You actually dont need it in yur careerPurpose You actually dont need it in your careerA lot has been written lately about how everyone is looking for more purposein their careers. They want greater meaning from their work. If thats you, let me save you some grief.Stop the insanity.Youre chasing airLet me explainMost people reading this live in the 1%. If you make more than $12,000 a year, that puts you in the 1% of the worlds wealthiest population. As a result, your needs from a job have shifted from food, water, shelterto also now include a sense of satisfaction. You want your work to make you feel good. I get it. I do, too. Theres nothing wrong with that. Its part of our evolution up Maslows hierarchy of needs. However, this is where things went wrong. You made the unknowing mistake of following what they told you to do.As people evolve in their thinking about what a good job is, they often blindly follow the lead of all those before them and assume they should start to see k more for themselves. You chase bigger, better jobs that pay more and have more responsibility. You strive to be able to answer the question, What do you do? in a way that impresses other people. You make career moves in an effort to gain respect. It makes you feel good for awhile, but eventually, you realize something is still missing. The satisfaction you seek continues to elude you. Thats when you decide its your jobs fault. You want to have more purpose and meaning from your work. You want to make a bigger impact. In fact, it shouldnt surprise us that millennials, the youngest generation in the workforce, are the ones demanding purposeful work the most. Theyve been raised on the mantra, you can be anything you want to be- dont settle, and all the pressure to find fulfillment that comes with it.Heres the hard truthWanting purpose is just an excuse for not knowing (and appreciating) how you create value. If you want to feel more satisfied in your career, you need to step back and as k yourself these questionsWhat problems do I love to solve? What pain do I like to alleviate for others? How do I create value? If you cant answer them, then I would make it a point to find the answers. I promise, the satisfaction will follow. And, if you think you dont have any value to offer, youre wrong.Everyone has a way to create valueToday, in your current job, youre surrounded by customers, coworkers, managers, and the world at large. Think about how much value you could create today by solving the problems of your customers and making work better for your coworkers and managers. When you deeply understand and appreciate the value you provide on a daily basis, you can answer the question, What do you do? with passion and enthusiasm. Its infectious. It also opens doors. But most important, it provides you with the satisfaction you are seeking. This piece originally appeared on LinkedIn. J.T. ODonnell is the founder and CEO of WorkItDaily.com.

How to Stick to Your New Years Career Resolutions

How to Stick to Yur New Years Career ResolutionsHow to Stick to Your New Years Career Resolutions The best part of the New Year? We all get a chance to have a do-over. Whatever goals and dreams you have been thinking about over the past year, nows your chance to make those achievements possible over the next twelve months.Looking for a new job? Working toward a promotion ? Planning to ask for a raise ? No matter the career aspiration, we all need a little help and guidance to keep us on track - which is why we spoke with Laura Weldy, life coach at The Well Supported Woman. Based in Nashville, TN, Weldy helps millennial women seeking more confidence, clarity and connection in their daily lives. Heres what she advises for all jobs seekers and workers who want to stick to their New Years resolutions in 2019.Most of us who set New Years resolutions tend to have a few goals that are vague or a little too over the top. If you want to actually see your resolutions through, make sure you think about how realistic your goals are and how you will track the progress you make. For those of us with a full-time job, I love the idea of crafting some resolutions around the progress you desire to make in your career and the lifestyle you want to experience in your downtime, says Weldy. For those work resolutions, Weldy says its important to consider very measurable ones - so focus your resolutions on specific awards, titles, projects or milestones you want to complete or work on this year. One of the hardest parts about situation New Years resolutions is how we treat ourselves when we dont stick to them. Dont worry - youre not alone in this. So many people feel the same way about their resolutions. If you want to get ahead in your career , you cant set resolutions that are going to make you feel bad about yourself. Its hard to avoid this, but it comes down to spending more time thinking about the resolutions you are drumherum and why you are setting the m.This is one of the downsides of the New Years resolution phenomenon - if you didnt achieve your resolutions belastung year (or the year before that) its easy to get discouraged, says Weldy. Your resolutions or goals should never be a source of shame for you - instead, think of them as always changing reflections of what matters to you right now.Working a full-time job or tackling the job hunt is hard work enoughso your resolutions should focus on positive ways to help make the process easier, or to help you achieve your goals. If you set a long list of resolutions where the majority are goals that are going to take a lot of work and add more hours to your workday, youre eventually going to burn out . As a result, find it hard to keep up with everything. Not to mention, you wont be feeling too happy, both about your work ethic and yourselfWeldy encourages us to evaluate our resolutions by asking ourselves Is this truly important to me, or is this something I feel I SHOULD do?In stead, she says to focus on the resolutions that youre really excited about in order to have the most success with your goal setting. If theres a really exciting project you can take ownership of in the New Year, focus on that goal right away.Sometimes when we set our New Years resolutions, we set too many big goals and later find ourselves completely failing at keeping most of them. We start the year excited and make a long list of all the ideas we have and all the things we want to accomplish. Some 50 resolutions later, and we cant even remember half the ones we set for ourselves.I see this all the time with resolutions because I think goal setting and living in that mental space of what could be possible for you is so much fun, notes Weldy. But even more fun than creating a list of 2,000 goals and imagining your dream life is actually LIVING that life. That happens when we prioritize and focus.Weldy recommends keeping your resolution list short with about 3-5 resolutions in tot al.Its hard to stick to your goals on your own - but it doesnt have to be that way. Consider showing your resolutions to your boss and asking them to help keep you accountable for the career goals youre setting in the New Year.If you dont necessarily want your manager to know your resolutions, you can always confide in a co-worker, or even consider working with a personal coach.Find someone to help hold you accountable, and keep your resolutions somewhere where you see them every day, advises Weldy. If you are still struggling with sticking to your resolutions, you may need someone to help you better understand your mode of operating in the world, your motivations and how to maximize your time and energy. Nothing in this world is truly one-size-fits-all - including productivity hacks and tools for goal accomplishment. This is when working with a professional life coach comes in handy.Dont worry - youve got this And if you dont quite reach your goals this year, youll always ha ve a do-over at the end of 2019.

Think again your career never takes a break, even when 80-something temperatures tempt you outside and out-of-offices take over your inbox. Most industries slow down in the months between May and August, making it the ideal time to double-down on your own personal growth as an executive (or a c-level hopeful). As career expert for TopResume Amanda Augustine explains, to be a good leader you need to have exceptional communication skills, be able to creatively solve problems, and possess an ability to motivate those around you - to personenname a few things. And while you may be a superstar in some of these areas, you cant win at everything right off the bat. Thats why its recommended to take the longer days as an opportunity to expand your knowledge. Here, a few expert-driven ways to grow your leadership skills this summerOrganize a summer sports gruppeTh ough its been a while since you were on a varsity team, the feel-good endorphins that come with exercise and camaraderie. Augustine says organizing fun, active outdoor activities in the summer for you, your friends and your team can do more than work up your heart rate, it can also ignite some rusty leadership skills you havent considered lately.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreStarting a sports team gives you a chance to work on your organization, communication, and leadership skills throughout the process, she explains. Depending on your location, you can book events through ZogSports or Rivall, or just head to the park and do your own thing.Prioritize networkingWhen rooftop hangs are the norm, why not add an element of professional socializing? Career expert Wendi Weiner says summer is ideal for leaders to build their network and improve their relationships with clients or te am members.Because it is generally a more relaxed period, summer Fridays, happy hours and plenty of event invites allow your calendar to be filled with fun - but also effective - mingling. Internally, she says you could even consider a more strategic open door policy to welcome anyone-and-everyone to come and discuss the company and goals with you. This will create that summer mindset all year-round.Take a classIf youre a parent, how much do you push your school-aged kids to keep reading, even in the summer? Or monitor their screentime to ensure theyre actually using that noggin? Definitely, more than you challenge yourself to study like you did in college or high school. With long flights, beach vacays and plenty of time to dive into a lengthy topic, Augustine suggests booking yourself into a class this season. You may find it surprisingly easier to fit in that online course youve been meaning to take for months, while your workload is somewhat lighter and many people are out of t he office for vacation. Thanks to the plethora of sites and apps available, you can easily improve your business writing skills at your own pace and while youre on the go, she explains. Not sure where to start, take a gander through sites like Envato Tuts+, Coursera, Udemy, edX, GoSkills, Lynda.com, and SkillShare to find the right class to help improve any number of skills that will make you a better and stronger leader, she recommends.Practice better communicationFounder and CEO of The Lonely Entrepreneur, Michael Dermer says there are a handful of must-haves for effective, empowering leaders. Two of these are emotional intelligence and communication - both skills that you can use the summer to focus your energy toward. With EI, you can book 11 meetings with your team members to really understand their passions and how to best manage them.Great leaders take into account the factors that drive people and the circumstances they are operating in. Every situation requires a different action and understanding when to apply what solution is an invaluable skill for leaders, he explains.VolunteerEveryone has a cause that ignites your spirit and makes them want to revolutionize change. In addition to donating money, giving the gift of your time can also be an effective way to make a difference. And, in turn, teach you more about leadership. As Augustine explains, hands-on, team-building experiences force you to think critically and strategically, often in real-time. Another way to help is to use your expertise for the greater good.Look for skills-based volunteer opportunities that will also allow you to leverage the skills youve built up during your career, she explains. This may be pro-bono social media work, free blogs for charities or even accounting. If you need help finding a non-profit, Augustine says to look on Catchafire, VolunteerMatch, AllForGood, and CreateTheGood, and HandsOnNetwork for help.

Receiving Feedback With Grace and Dignity

Receiving Feedback With Grace and DignityReceiving Feedback With Grace and DignityAre you interested in hearing about how others view your work and your contribution? If you are, make it easy for them to tell you. If they think youll appreciatively consider their feedback, youll get lots more. And, that is a good thing, really. Thoughtful feedback helps you grow both personally and professionally. Accurate feedback helps you with your lifelong career development, too. Its a gift that people who care about your personal and professional success can provide. But, theyll only provide feedback if you are approachable and allow them to feel comfortable giving you the feedback. Once they are rebuffed, argued with, or subjected to your defensive behavior, coworkers and bosses are less likely to approach you again with helpful feedback. In the case of coworkerswho have the saatkorn goals and direction as you, this is sad, as you all need to pull together for the good of the group. In the cas e of your boss, your defensiveness is even sadder. This is the person from whom you need to welcome feedback. Its difficult enough to be a manager who is in a position wherein he or she must provide feedback- and its already an uncomfortable role for many because they are untrained and ill-prepared. You would do well notlage to make the situation even more difficult for your boss. How to Receive Feedback These are the steps you need to take to receive feedback with grace and dignity. Try to control your defensiveness. Fear of hurting you or having to deal with defensive or justifying behavior make people hesitant to give feedback to someone else. If you can create an aura of approachability, people are more likely to return with more feedback. Defensiveness, anger, justifying and excuse-making will ensure that coworkers and bosses are uncomfortable giving you feedback.Listen to understand. Practice all of the skills of an effective listenerincludingusing body language and facial expressions that encourage the other person to talk. Try to suspend judgment. After all, in learning the views of the feedback provider, you learn about yourself and how your actions are interpreted and seen in the world. Noted consultant and author, Tom Peters, in a well-known quote, said, Perception is all there is. Thats true for your career growth and progress. How the world views you is an opportunity for continued growth.Summarize and reflect what you hear. Your feedback provider will appreciate that you are really hearing what they are saying. Rather than using the little voice in your brain to argue, deny, or formulate your response, focus on making sure that you understand the point of view you are receiving. You are also determining the validity of what you are really hearing. Ask questions to clarify. Focus on questions to make sure that you understand the feedback. Once again, focus on understanding the feedback you are receiving, not on your next response.Ask for examp les and stories that illustrate the feedback, so you know that you share meaning with the person providing feedback.Just because a person gives you feedback, doesnt mean their feedback is right or widely shared by other coworkers and bosses. Remember that they see your actions but interpret them through their own perceptual screen and life experiences. Be approachable. People avoid giving feedback to those people who aregrumpy and dismissive. Your openness to feedback is evident through your body language, facial expressions, and welcoming manner. You can also request feedback verbally asking questions such as, John, how did I do on that presentation? Was I clear?Check with others to determine the reliability of the feedback you have received. If only one person believes it about you, it may be just about him or her, not you. This is a major step as you always have the choice about whether to accept feedback and do something about it- or not. Remember, only you have the right and th e ability to decide what to do with the feedback you have received. It is up to you to check it out with others, seek out examples, and then, decide if the feedback is worth doing something about. Tips for Gracefully Receiving Feedback Here are additional communication tips about how to receive feedback with grace and dignity. Try to show your appreciation to the person providing the feedback. Theyll feel encouraged and believe it or not, you do want to encourage feedback.Even your manager or supervisor finds providing feedback scary. They never know how the person receiving feedback is going to react. If you find yourself becoming defensive or hostile, practice stress management techniques such as taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly.Focusing on understanding the feedback by questioning and restating usually defuses any feelings you have of hostility or anger. If you really disagree, are angry or upset, and want to dissuade the other person of their opinion, wait until your emotions are under control to reopen the discussion at a later date. Doing this at the moment of feedback is rampant with the potential for the whole conversation to fail.
